To identify our award winners around the globe IR magazine commissions independent third party firms to undertake comprehensive investor perception studies in the various markets. The surveys, which are conducted annually among members of the relevant investment communities, discover which companies are providing the best investor relations service to portfolio managers and analysts in a range of IR areas: from websites to IROs; from investment meetings to annual reports; from corporate governance to corporate responsibility; and more. They also examine investment community attitudes on key topical issues affecting IR in the region under scrutiny.
Reports of the investor perception studies are published immediately after each awards ceremony.
Survey participants
The underlying goal of the studies is to give corporate IROs a steer on the likes and dislikes of the investment community; and to enable them to benchmark their own IR performance against that of their regional peers.
Respondents generally fall into one of three main categories: buy-side analysts, sell-side analysts, and portfolio managers. There is no pre-determined list of companies to choose from: respondents can nominate any company that is listed on a stock exchange in the region being surveyed and domiciled there.
Methodology
The same basic methodology and scoring systems are used in all surveys. Each respondent is asked to list three companies for each award category: their first, second and third choices; they are also asked to explain their reasons for citing these companies and a selection of their comments are reported in the published survey. Points are attributed to the nominations – usually five points for a first mention, three for a second, and one for a third. The company with the highest points score in a category wins the award for that category. The Grand Prix award goes to the company the investment community believes does the best overall job of investor relations. In some cases, this is assessed by aggregating a range of different categories; in others it is assessed on the basis of responses to a simple question, asking them which company has the best IR. Rankings are also published in the reports of the study, listing companies in order of their total point scores.
