November 2009: the sample selection
Thomson Reuters and Ipreo provide contact details for more than 30,000 US-based analysts and portfolio managers who will be invited to vote for companies with the best IR. For one award category – best retail investor communications – Barron’s Online provides the names and email addresses of 20,000 subscribers and BetterInvesting invites more than 60,000 individual investor members to vote.
Independent research firm Erdos & Morgan is responsible for making sure the data samples are fully representative of the US investment community.
December 2009-January 2010: the survey
Over a six-week period, these individuals are invited to complete an online survey using Erdos & Morgan’s secure website. Only those individuals with an approved PIN are able to gain access to the site. While many people participate in the study year after year, there’s always a healthy proportion of new respondents as well.
To provide context for the research, as well as valuable insight into the thinking of investment professionals, the survey also covers topical issues, such as how IR has improved in quality – or not. It then moves on to discussing specific areas of IR (see left for a full category list), with respondents asked to nominate companies in each category.
January 2010: results analysis
Once the survey stage of the research is completed, it’s all math. The companies with the highest point scores make the short lists for the awards categories. To better represent companies with different IR budgets and capabilities, the results for the grand prix and best IRO categories are split into four market-cap ranges.
In 2010, for the first time, Erdos & Morgan will screen the results by industry to identify the top IR performers in each sector. All this ensures a transparent, independent set of results IROs can trust as a valuable benchmarking tool.
February 2010: nominees announced
IR magazine receives the results in early February 2010 and contacts all short-listed companies to give them the good news. The short list is then published to the entire US IR community a month before the event.
March 24, 2010: winners announced
And finally... on the night of the awards ceremony, the names of the winners are revealed and they receive their coveted trophies.
March 25, 2010: report published
The results and analysis, along with verbatim comments from respondents and the full rankings of the leading companies – in overall terms as well as by sector and by category of IR activity – are compiled into a report and published as the Investor Perception Study, US 2010 the day after the awards.
2010 research is now available for purchase - Find out how and why the winners won.
Easily the most thorough and comprehensive report on investment community attitudes toward IR available in the US market, the Investor Perception Study, US 2010 is absolutely essential reading for anyone involved in financial communications.
